The lapinkoira
The Lapinkoira is a dog of Finnish origin used for guarding and herding reindeer, but also as a domestic pet.
It has a robust constitution, with a height of about 49 cm for males and 44 cm for females, weighing between 16 and 21 kg.
They do not have major health problems.
They undergo analysis for hereditary diseases, periodic eye diseases, hip and elbow x-rays.
The coat is thick and abundant with a fine and dense undercoat that, despite what one might think, does not require too much care. Thanks to its characteristics, in fact, the Lapinkoira’s coat is “self-cleaning”: dirt hardly sticks to it, and even if it gets muddy and wet, you will see that as it dries, it will become clean again and, above all, it won’t smell.
Another positive thing is that the Lapinkoira does not shed!
If you brush it occasionally, you won’t have any problems even during shedding periods, otherwise you will only have a lot of undercoat to remove.
Particular attention should be paid to removing the winter undercoat to allow the dog’s skin to breathe even in hot periods, during which some precautions should be taken, such as keeping them sheltered from the sun, in shaded and ventilated areas or indoors during the hottest hours of the day, always with plenty of fresh water available. The rest will be done by the coat, which acts as a thermoregulator.
The Lapinkoira has a fantastic character. Calm and patient, but also alert and dynamic. Peaceful and brave, it gets along with both other dogs and people but does not hesitate to respond to any aggressions. It is very good with children.
It adapts to being in the garden as well as in an apartment where they can stay alone without problems. In the garden, they will surely have many more stimuli and will not get bored. We recommend creating challenges for them at home as well, to calm their dynamism, curiosity, and acumen and keep them engaged.
It may have a tendency to bark, but never excessively. Being a very clever and intelligent dog, it is easy to train and quickly understands the “rules of the house.”
Certainly, it is a loyal dog for which the family is everything. Very attentive to the world around them, but always keeping an eye on the members of their family.
A cuddly and playful life companion that will surely steal your heart!
